According to the AD-Merkblatt B51 sec. 6.7.1.7, it must be proved for heat exchangers with ends, which are mutually anchored by the pipes and the shell, that the shell can support the additional axial force in the case that the pressure in the pipes is larger than twice the value of the pressure outside of the pipes. A calculation standard is not given for this case. Under neglection of the bending effect this proof can be performed with Hooke's stress-strain relation.
The B51A module determines the stress in the shell and the pipes, for stiff, solidly anchored heads. The effect of different thermal expansion is also taken into account.
